Biotechnologyyyyyy!!! The word has started buzzing in everyone’s ears and heard everywhere from classrooms to cafeterias. The word ‘Biotechnology’ has received enormous importance and significance owing to its unlimited potential to serve and benefit humanity. Biotechnology touches our lives in all aspects, be it be food, health, or life in general. The day is not far, when we cannot fathom our life without biotechnology. From the food grown at our farms to the medicine we buy and the ways we clean up the environment, biotechnology affects many facets of our daily lives. The booming biotech sector is a little like a country with its own culture. And cultures tend to have languages. So how does one begin to speak Biotech?

That’s what we at the Department of Biotechnology, Sri Jayachamarendra College of Engineering, JSS Science and Technology University attempt to do here. We facilitate you to learn the language of Biotechnology and we are well trained and equipped to do so.Major developments in the biotech field happen each day of the year, with many announced by academic and professional communities before the general public is even aware of industry advancements. At the Department of Biotechnology, you’ll join in these exciting discoveries. Course topics range from Microbial Biotechnology, Animal and plant cell culture and tissue engineering, Bioreaction engineering and Bioreactor design to Molecular diagnostics. The availability of various and varied electives enables you to specialize in selected biotechnology areas.

The Department has a unique commitment to educating a broad spectrum of students—including undergraduate, post-graduate, and research scholars. Started with B.E Biotechnology for 30 students in 2002, and the department has expanded into offering M.Tech, and Ph.D. programmes in Biotechnology.

The students and scholars are well-placed all over the world, mostly abroad, and are in great demand in industries, academics and research institutions. Its pioneering outcome based curriculum developed and practiced as an autonomous institution under World Bank initiative of Technical Education Quality Improvement programme since 2007 and now being a private University, is a model for many other Biotech institutions across the country and is highly valued. The courses are well balanced with core, elective and ancillary component consisting of Basic sciences, Engineering sciences, Humanities, social sciences and project work.

The Department of Biotechnology is accredited twice with National Board of Accreditation (NBA) which is one of the major bodies responsible for accreditation of higher education institutions in India.

The department has highley qualified and experienced faculty members who are actively involved both in academics and researchCore Research areas of the departments are Medical Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Chemical biology, Cancer Biology, Plant and Animal Biotechnology,  Nanobiotechnology, Microbial and plant metabolites, Insilco drug designing, Biofuel technology and Bioprocess Technology.
