Electronics and Communication Engineering

 

The department of E&C was established in 1968. It offers undergraduate & post graduate programmes. In addition to these, it also offers M.Sc. Engineering by research & Ph. D programs which provide a platform for bright graduates and postgraduates to conduct research in state-of-the-art technologies. The department is composed of well qualified faculty with good retention. The Department is also a recognized centre under the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) of the Government of India. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in both the analytic and technological aspects of E&C Engineering. It also provides ample opportunities to students to work on mini-projects, develop communication skills, explore internship opportunities in industry and take part in national & international design contests like PACE, Aero-design It has very good placement record in the college. Very active IEEE student chapter organizing National paper presentation competitions and other events such as Vacation Project Mania, Latex workshops & mini project competitions, etc.

The regular activities of the department include monitoring Internships for UG and PG students at various Industries and Institutes like IISc, IIT’s and NIT’s, organizing Industrial visits for UG and PG students, Conducting Expert lectures and workshops to UG and PG students, providing National Centre for MEMS design and e-Yantra lab where students will be doing projects.

In addition, provides interaction with industries like Philip and analog devices where the students get opportunity for internships.

  1. Analyse, design and provide engineering solutions in the areas of analog and digital circuits and systems

  1. Engineering Knowledge: Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering problems.
  1. Problem Analysis: Identify, formulate, research literature and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences

IICDC 2017 is a year long competition where young budding engineers are groomed to convert their projects into a real life products. The competition is organised jointly by Texas Instruments and Department of Science and Technology(DST), Govt. of India. . The IICDC is anchored by NSRCEL, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB) and supported by MyGov. It was an amazing journey where we started with an idea and converted it to a commercially viable product. Our idea titled “Aura : Reinventing the way we see light” made it to the top 510 teams from a total of 5049 ideas over 965 engineering colleges.

Then the process of slowly converting the project into a finished product began. Our idea is basically a colour temperature variant LED bulb, which changed its colour temperature based on the outside light. It changes its colour temperature automatically and could be overridden manually also. In the next round we were given TI components whichever we needed to build our product. We submitted a Business and technical evaluation video of our product. The business aspects included marketing, funding , logistics etc.

We were one of the 70 teams to be invited to the semi-finals held at IIM Bangalore, where we showcased our product to various Technical and business mentors. We pitched our product to a panel of judges at IIM B. By this time our product had gone a long way from where we had first started.

All our hard work paid off and we were in the top 30 Teams all over India to be selected for the Intermediate Finals round. We attended a 3 day boot camp at IIM Bangalore and Texas Instruments where we were guided by business and technical mentors. We were given funds for Product Development which we utilised to manufacture our product to industry grade.

For the Finals we had to come up with a solid Business plan for launching our start-up and a sound technical product ready. We were one of the top 20 Teams Selected for the Finals after this video presentation round out of which 10 start-ups would be incubated at IIM Bangalore. We went to IIM Bangalore for the finals and pitched in our idea again. But this time we could not make it to the top 10 teams which were incubated at IIM B.

Nevertheless it was a great journey as engineers to convert a project idea into a fully commercial product. IICDC is a wonderful platform if you have an idea that can potentially bring about a positive impact in the society. It was a huge knowledge gain for all of us where we clearly understood the realities we had to face in bringing a product to the market. We are grateful for the support of our mentor Mr Yashwanth S D and also Mr. Praveen Kumar from JSS-CMS in our journey.

IEEE-SJCE STUDENT BRANCH

IEEE-SJCE Student Branch which started as an elite group 27 years ago, today has sprawled throughout the campus of SJCE, making the students technically more competitive, more professional and enhancing their abilities as an engineer. Since then IEEE-SJCE STUDENT BRANCH, a division under region 10 of IEEE has been known for the immensity with which its members were bestowed. The very success story of it students as professionals into their respective fields after graduations speaketh of its standards.

IEEE-SJCE now has about 330+ members from six fields of engineering: Biotechnology, Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, Electrical & Electronics, Information Science and instrumentation technology. Apart from these many students from various post-graduation departments have also subscribed to be the members.

IEEE-SJCE conducts two annual technical fests – TUXEDO, a linux fest during the odd semesters and CYBERIA, the annual technical fest conducted during the even semesters. CYBERIA was instigated 18 years ago and till now it has been organized for 17 years. The events in the fest are so organized as to give students from all branches of engineering, irrespective of them being members or not and irrespective of their branches to show case their talents and abilities.

In order to make students technically competitive technical tests on C programming microprocessors etc are conducted. Various workshops and crash courses are also organized. An annual leadership workshop adores the calendar of events every year, which helps the students to improve as leaders and inculcates in them, the spirits of true leaders. Apart from this, lots of talks are organized from people representing industry, academia and research as well.

The standards of IEEE-SJCE were proven the best when it was awarded the Best student Branch for the year 2003-2004. Among the competitors for this tag were the top colleges of VTU, Manipal institute of technology and NITK, Suratkal as well.

IEEE-SJCE is also proud of nurturing IEEE-EDS STUDENT CHAPTER,. IEEE-SJCE is the only student branch to have gained permission to start this chapter throughout India. IEEE-SJCE also has a Women in Engineering Student Chapter.

ELECTRON DEVICES SOCIETY

WHO WE ARE?

IEEE SJCE EDS has been providing students with the basic electronics knowledge since its inception. It has helped students get more familiarized with electronic components, the various techniques of circuit making and the basics of robot building.

WHAT WE DO?

IEEE SJCE EDS has been providing students with the basic electronics knowledge since its inception and to achieve this, a plethora of workshops have been designed and implemented  and a few of them have been introduced below.

SNAP CIRCUITS

Snap circuit product is a tool for entering the exciting world of electronics. Electronics plays an important and increasing role in everyday lives, and so it is important to have some basic knowledge of it.

In this workshop the students have hands-on session of basic electrical and electronics circuits. The workshop is conducted for first and second year students exclusively. The students are allowed to explore different circuits with the help of the manuals which come along with the kits under the supervision of volunteers.

SOLDERING AND ETCHING WORKSHOP

Soldering is a concept used in each and every electronic appliance. It is necessary to know the proper soldering techniques. Keeping this in mind, IEEE SJCE EDS conducts Soldering and Etching workshop in odd semesters, where senior IEEE EDS members teach the 2nd years and 1st years. They make participants etch a simple circuit and solder it.

ROBOTICS WORKSHOP

As they say our knowledge is volatile in nature until we apply the concept of our knowledge in real time situation. Hence Robotics 8.X, one of the biggest events was conducted by the IEEE-SJCE EDS Chapter.

The main highlights of the workshop was that the participants got to learn robotics from scratch and then move on to more advanced topics like Bluetooth controlled robots, voice controlled robots, DTMF controlled robots and even Android app controlled robots.

VACATION PROJECT MANIA

“Whatever we possess becomes of double value when we have the opportunity of sharing it with others” this famous adage of Jean Nicolas embodies the idea of conducting VPM.

Vacation Project Mania, an initiative of IEEE SJCE EDS is conducted during the vacations. VPM is basically an interactive session in which the seniors and juniors mingle together to share their knowledge, ideas and most important of all, an experience, but the torch bearers of this successful mania are the seniors without a doubt.

VPM gets huge response from all circuit branches, around 120 students attend the project sessions every day for 4 hours VPM played prominent role in generating practical impulse in minds of young budding engineers.

WOMEN IN ENGINEERING

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to promoting women engineers and scientists and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic interests to a career in engineering.

Their mission is to facilitate the global recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines.

IEEE WIE envisions a vibrant community of IEEE women and men collectively using their diverse talents to innovate for the benefit of humanity. The idea of a WIE chapter in our student branch was conceived and implemented only a couple of years ago.

Since its inception, the chapter has been responsible for several activities and initiatives in our college. In the previous year, our team conducted a weekly activity by the name “Speak-O-Meter” to help students improve their communication skills. Our team made frequent visits to an orphanage to reach out to underprivileged girls and educate them about their chances in engineering.

We intend to carry on these activities and lot more this year in a larger and organized way. Being a part of IEEE SJCE will enable you to help make a difference in this world. Join us.

MAJOR ACTIVITIES OF WIE

Women in engineering chapter of IEEE SJCE has been very active in the past 2 years. There are several activities conducted by the WIE chapter. Some of the activities are:

Prayas:

An effort by our team to provide under privileged girls a positive learning environment that will help them unleash their potential. This includes frequent visits to an orphanage to reach out to the girls and educate them about their chances in engineering and help enhance their skills in computer applications and English.

Tech-Know-Logic:

IEEE-SJCE conducts a workshop on basics of MSP430 for the students of PDA, JSS-STU. The workshop is conducted for 2 days either during the month of January or February. Around 20 students from PDA attend the workshop which is organized and conducted completely by volunteers of IEEE-SJCE-WIE student branch.

WEB DEVELOPMENT BOARD

Web Designing board, a new wing of IEEE SJCE is an exclusive committee for designing and maintaining website and web pages pertaining to IEEE SJCE, its events and spread its motto. For us, WDB is a place where students from various disciplines of the campus meet together to put their creativity to create and design web pages and host them on web securely.

It also encourages the students in the campus to learn languages for web hosting like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP (server-side scripting) by conducting many technical sessions on them throughout the year, which are hosted by our core committee members.

Over the years, WDB has turned out be an integral part of IEEE SJCE, due to the growing importance of web in recent years and it shaping up as the best source of information. We, at WDB hope to strengthen the knowledge of web designing and hosting among the students to greater extent and work as a team to bring out web pages to create zing and get overwhelming response from the people on our organization and its events.

IEEE-SJCE EDITORIAL BOARD

At the IEEE EdBoard, we strive to present interesting news and articles, about the latest trends and discoveries in the technology field, while also providing a voice for IEEE-SJCE, its members, and the students.

We publish three editions of the IEEE Interface magazine, every year – the Orientation edition, about IEEE-SJCE’s events, workshops, etc; the Tuxedo edition, about the Open Source Software Revolution; and, the Cyberia Edition, which covers a wide array of the latest and greatest news related to technology.

Additionally, we conduct a unique, popular event during the Cyberia fest, titled Jugaad, where participants are given a set of out-of-the-world topics and asked to justify them in the silliest manner possible. As they say our knowledge is volatile in nature until we apply the concept of our knowledge in real time situation. Hence Robotics 8.X, one of the biggest events was conducted by the IEEE-SJCE EDS Chapter. The main highlights of the workshop were that the participants got to learn robotics from scratch and then move on to more advanced topics like Bluetooth controlled robots, voice-controlled robots, DTMF controlled robots and even Android app-controlled robots.

Dr. Shyam holds a doctorate in Real Time High Performance computing Systems, specializing in Parallel Computer Architecture from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (Gold medal) and has worked with CG Smith, Ericsson, Tata Consultancy Services and Philips. During his stint at Ericsson, Dr. Shyam, as the Center Head and General Manager, was responsible for building a technical team of more than 100 engineers, who were involved in new product development activities at Bangalore. At Ericsson, he was on special assignment at their head office in Stockholm, as a Strategic Product Manager for over 3 years.

Dr.Shyam is on the governing council for leading institutions like PES Inst of Technology, SJCE Mysore, T John Institute, Nandhi, ATMA, Aditya Institute and visiting faculty at BMS Engineering, SJCE and MIT Manipal. He serves as a Technical Director for Maastricht University Medical Center, Netherlands since 2010 and has groomed more than 50 research programs in healthcare and life sciences. He has filed more than 20 international patents and more than 40 publications in leading conferences and journals.

Shayan Srinivasa Garani received his B. E. in Electronics and Communication Engg., From SJCE, Mysuru University, M. S from the Univ. of Florida, Gainesville and Ph.D from Georgia Inst. of Technology, Atlanta in Electrical and Computer Engg. He is currently an Associate Professor at the Indian Inst. of Science within the EECS Division, where he established and directs the Physical Nano-memories Signal and Information Processing Lab. Prior to joining IISc, he was directing read channels research and managing external university programs at Western Digital in Irvine, USA and the Chairman for IDEMA-ASTC for signal processing and co-chair for the overall technological committee. He is currently the chairman for IEEE Data Storage Technical committee. His research interests include physical data storage, quantum information processing, computational neuroscience and engineering and music signal processing. Outside research and academics, he is Carnatic classical vocalist.
