“Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition: Challenges & Opportunities”

With the famous quote “One of the most feared expressions in modern times is – The computer is down” – Norman Ralph Augustine the Department of Information Science & Engineering, SJCE in association with AICTE ATAL Academy organized a FIVE Day Faculty Development Program on “Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition: Challenges & Opportunities” from 21/09/2020 – 25/09/2020 through Online Mode.

The workshop was inaugurated on 21/09/2020 at 10:00 AM. by Prof. P Nagabhushan, Director, IIIT Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. Prof. P Nagabhushan delivered an inaugural speech followed by a technical key note speech. During his inaugural speech, Prof. P Nagabhushan highlighted the overview and importance of New Education Policy. He highlighted how the present students evaluated during the conduction of Test/Events. He highlighted that the technical teaching should be practical focused rather than theoretical based. He emphasised that the Teaching and Learning should always be a single entity. He advised the faculty participants to give more scope for a student to think critically. Later, he delivered a Keynote talk on the present trends going on in the are of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. He highlighted the various issues pertaining towards how computer machines will understand the data, feature extraction & selection, dimensionality reduction, feature transformation and so on. He also highlighted how the Big Data is playing a vital role in many of the domains.

The Five Day Faculty Development Program was planned with 15 sessions with both theory and demonstration sessions. The main objective of the FDP is to introduce the participants to Computer Vision and its Applications, Enable the use of the state of the art methods in analyzing the Data using Pattern Recognition techniques, to discuss the various feature descriptors to analyze image and video data, to provide an overview of the major areas of CVPR and lastly to apply CV and PR Algorithms to Analyze Image and Video Data. The FDP emphasised more on challenges and opportunities in the filed of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition.

Around 140 academicians and researchers from various parts of India registered for the Faculty Development Program. Resource Person and Subject Experts were invited from various National Reputed Institutes and Universities like: IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Sri City Andhra Pradesh, IIIT Dharwad, IIT Indore, NIT Surathkal, University of Mysore and JSS Science and Technology University. The FDP also witnessed the Resource Person from reputed industries like: Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Continental India Pvt. Ltd, Amphisoft, India and Visteon Corporation, USA.
