Maheshwari Das of #JSS_STU received runner-up trophy and a cash prize at speak for India Karnataka 2018

Maheshwari Das participated in Speak for India Karnataka Edition which is an intercollegiate debate competition organised by federal bank in association with Times of India and Vijaya Karnataka. The Karnataka Edition was held in 2 languages- Kannada and English, debater has to choose a language and maintain it throughout the competition. Phases of evaluation would include district, zonal, semi-final, final and the grand finale.

The district level selections for Mysuru took place in National Institute of Engineering, where the selection took place based on the 3 minutes debating on the topic given 5 minutes prior the debate.

The zonal level was conducted after a month of district level selection, where students selected as top debaters by the judging panel in the district level appear to debate. Maheshwari in the zonals conducted at Al-Ameen College of Management, Bangalore debated about why and how bi-party system will be beneficial if implemented in India.

She was selected as one among the top 26 contestants of Speak for India Debate Competition 2018 and was then eligible for the semi-finals and to become the ‘Most popular Speaker of Speak for India – Karnataka Edition 2018’. Vote appeal video was uploaded on www.speakforindia.com and YouTube. The one who received the highest number of votes received an IPhone X in the grand finale event

The top 26 contestants competed at the semi-finals at Chancery Pavilion, Bangaluru on 11:02:2019. Maheshwari Das had to debate against the motion on “India’s Economy is too small to make unicorns but the number of people trying their luck is many. Is this a recipe for dot.com burst of 2000?” She put forth her argument with examples of the Indian unicorns – Swiggy, Oyo, Zomato. Her argument focused on how the home based food delivery idea made it the unicorn list and thus concluded by telling that this is a path with ups and downs but certainly not a down hill.

The Final and Grand Final event was held in Sheraton Grand, Bengaluru on 12:02:2019  . She had to debate that there should be a limit in the free data packages given by the telecom companies. The panel of discussion included 4 students from various colleges across Karnataka. 4 students including Maheshwari were given 3 minutes to debate and 1min for open house discussion where the judging panel put forth their arguments and views regarding the debate.

Grand Finale was held on the same day. The chief guest for the evening was the popular actor Upendra, DP Nagendra Prasad Kumar IRS, chief principal commissioner, GST and Actor Chetan Kumar.

The Grand finale was for the top 2 speakers. Two Mysuru students made it to the top 2 -Maheshwari Das and Sudeep Kumar. The debate was on ‘Are policies like farm loan waivers and Rs 6,000 a year direct transfer to farmers a good way to help the farmers in India?’ Finalist Maheshwari Das had to speak against the topic. She debated that the government could have given them other basic necessities such as free education for their children, seeds at a discount, etc.

To challenge the skills of the debating the jury flipped the tables and asked them to reverse their roles. On the spot the finalists had to change their argument and debate on the opposite which demonstrated that the world is changing and what is right now may not be right in the future.

After the Grand finale debating session the winner and runner-up were announced. The winner for Speak for India Karnataka 2018 was Sudeep Kumar and the Runner-up for the edition was Maheshwari Das.

Maheshwari Das received a trophy, merit certificate, and 1 lakh in cash. The college received a trophy and cash price of Rs 20,000.

Shyam Srinivas, MD and CEO, Federal Bank; C Balagopal, Director , Federal Bank and Raju Hormis,head CSR, Federal Bank also graced the event.
